Bionow BioFocus 2026 Conference: Key Insights and Opportunities

On Wednesday 17th June 2026, Belinda White (Creative Director) and Dr Sophia Quigley (Project and Communications Manager) attended the Bionow BioFocus 2026 conference on behalf of Arttia Creative, a specialist design agency for the Life Sciences sector. The conference, held at The Catalyst in Newcastle upon Tyne, brought together leaders from industry and academia to connect, collaborate and share opportunities for growth.

Sophia shares her reflections from the event:
“It was great to see some familiar faces, meet new people and gain a deeper insight into the state of the industry.

The one-day programme featured panel discussions, presentations and demonstrations of the latest technologies, alongside valuable insights into what's on the horizon for the sector.

It was inspiring to see so much innovation in one room, particularly from organisations based here in the North East. Having studied at Durham, Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, I’ve definitely been drawn to the region, having been here for over 13 years!”

One of the key themes running throughout the day was the North East's strength in life sciences, particularly in areas such as manufacturing and diagnostics.

During the State of the Nation panel discussion, it was highlighted that the region already possesses many of the essential ingredients for building successful life science businesses.

However, a recurring challenge is that companies often need to look beyond the region to access the investment, support and networks required to achieve their next stage of growth.

A significant part of the discussion focused on how the region can better retain and support its growing businesses. A common view was that the North East has a compelling story to tell but needs to be more vocal and louder in showcasing its strengths, successes and opportunities.

By promoting the region more effectively, there is an opportunity to attract further investment, talent and support, while enabling businesses to scale without feeling the need to relocate.

As a North East-built business, Arttia Creative have been supporting life science companies for more than 18 years. We understand the challenges ambitious businesses face as they grow, secure investment and enter new markets.

We also see the incredible innovation, expertise and potential that exists across the region. We help companies by developing strong brands and digital strategies to become investor-ready and communicate their value effectively.

We're proud to play a role in supporting the growth of the North East's life sciences sector.

The conference highlighted that whilst challenges remain, by continuing to champion innovation, collaboration and investment, the North East is well positioned to strengthen its reputation as a leading hub for life sciences.

BioFocus 2026: Why Brilliant Science Needs a Clearer Story

At BioFocus 2026, one theme stood out to me clearly: early-stage life science innovation does not grow through science alone. Across the discussions, there was a strong sense that the UK has remarkable biotech, medtech and life science capability, but that visibility, positioning and communication play a vital role in helping that innovation move from the lab into national and international opportunity.
