Helping researchers to model the timing of neural development across mammalian species
The client approached Arttia Creative to help them to create a new custom built website using a database originally assembled by Finlay and Darlington, 1995 that finds equivalent post conception (PC) dates across mammalian species. A website to present data in real time based on the visitors selecting a range of species and time frames.
Christine Charvet, PhD and her colleagues from Cornell University and the University of Arkansas in the US developed a resource that enables researchers to find corresponding ages across humans and non-human species.
Clinicians and researchers rely on this neurodevelopmental data for their work. The originally created website had long been archived and not available online. The goal was to produce a new website to provide the data in an easily accessible format to those who needed it. The website needed to display the existing data and be expandable to accommodate any new research data.
Arttia Creative worked closely with Dr Charvet to produce a website that allowed the end-user to perform various calculations using the team’s research data in order to extract data for their own clinical or research use.
Various techniques were explored before settling on the integration of the R data and calculations using Shiny apps. This allowed for easy updating of the ongoing research data as well as ease of use for the end-user.
With our understanding of life science, we had a good understanding of what was needed to create the client’s desired result.
Working closely with the team at Translating time designing a website to translate neurodevelopment time across 18 mammalian species. 18 species with approx. 200-400 events and the website is free to access and is used mainly by Academia.
Clinicians and researchers rely on neurodevelopment data obtained from a variety of non-human species, it is essential to relate studies across the different experimental animals, and ultimately to humans, in an easily accessible format.
